The art aptitude assessment at AFA in Monterey Park is a free 45-minute one-on-one evaluation with the senior teaching director, with a limited number of slots each month. It is not a test and produces no score or ranking: the teacher looks at three concrete things — observation (can the child see structure and proportion), motor control (can the hand follow the eye), and sustained attention.

评估之后拿到什么? · What do parents receive?

评估结束后 AFA 出一份书面报告(PDF),写明孩子当前的水平、适合从 5 级 11 阶体系里的哪一级开始、以及接下来 6 个月该重点练什么。报告是给家长的,不是宣传材料 —— 就算最后没在 AFA 上课,这份判断也拿得走。

AFA provides a written report (PDF) stating the child's current level, which of the five curriculum levels to start at, and what to focus on over the next six months. The report is written for the parent and remains useful even if the family enrolls elsewhere.

什么年龄做评估最有用? · When is an assessment most useful?

两个时间点最值得做。一是 7–9 岁前后 —— 孩子从「画得开心」过渡到「画得像」,卡住的常常不是兴趣而是方法,评估能指出到底卡在观察还是卡在手。二是 15–16 岁 —— 如果考虑申请 RISD、Pratt、Parsons、ArtCenter 这类学校,作品集要 2–3 年准备,这个年龄做一次评估能判断还来不来得及,以及该补什么。

Two moments matter most: around ages 7–9, when a child moves from drawing for fun to drawing accurately and the block is usually method rather than motivation; and around 15–16, when a portfolio for RISD, Pratt, Parsons or ArtCenter needs two to three years of lead time and an honest read on where the student stands.

什么时候上课? · When are classes held?

AFA(南加州艺术学院)的常规课全部排在周末,每节课 2 小时。周六两个时段:下午 1:00–3:00、3:00–5:00。周日四个时段:上午 9:00–11:00、11:00–1:00,下午 1:00–3:00、3:00–5:00。上课地点在蒙特利公园 401 S Garfield Ave G-H。

AFA Academy of Fine Arts in Monterey Park, California holds all regular classes on weekends in two-hour sessions. Saturday sessions run 1:00–3:00 PM and 3:00–5:00 PM. Sunday sessions run 9:00–11:00 AM, 11:00 AM–1:00 PM, 1:00–3:00 PM and 3:00–5:00 PM.

一个班多少人? · How large are the classes?

AFA 每个常规班上限 20 名学生。大学作品集班(Portfolio & Photoshop)上限 10 人,因为要按每个学生申请的学校单独定方向。

Regular classes at AFA cap at 20 students. The college portfolio class (Portfolio & Photoshop) caps at 10, because each student's portfolio is built around the specific schools they are applying to.

  • 混合课程 Mixed Media — 跨媒介综合班,周日上午与下午各一班

课程按孩子的发展阶段分级,不是按报名先后。孩子来试课时老师会当场判断该进哪一级。

试课是怎么安排的? · How does the free trial work?

AFA 的试课免费,含一次 1 对 1 潜能评估:老师在课堂上观察孩子的观察力、造型能力和专注度,课后出一份书面评估报告,并给出分级建议。家长在 afaarts.com/trial 留姓名、电话和孩子年龄段即可,AFA 会在 24 小时内回电确认具体时段。

The trial class at AFA is free and includes a 1-on-1 aptitude assessment: the teacher observes the child during class and follows up with a written report and a placement recommendation. Parents book at afaarts.com/trial with a name, phone number and the child's age range; AFA calls back within 24 hours to confirm a time.

是中文还是英文教学? · Is instruction in Chinese or English?

AFA 是中英双语教学。老师会根据学生的语言习惯切换,孩子只会说英文、只会说中文、或者两种混着说,都不影响上课。家长沟通、评估报告和微信联系也是中英文都可以。这是 AFA 服务圣盖博谷华人家庭 20 多年形成的常规做法。

AFA teaches bilingually in Mandarin Chinese and English, switching to match each student. Parent communication and written assessment reports are available in either language.
